How Does an L-Bar Sealer Work?

An L-bar sealer wraps a product in heat-shrink film and uses an L-shaped sealing bar to cut and seal the film around the product. After sealing, the wrapped product typically passes through a shrink tunnel, where controlled heat causes the film to contract tightly around the package.

The L-bar sealing process is as follows:

1. The product is positioned

The product enters the sealing area manually by an operator or automatically on a conveyor and is positioned beneath the film.

2. Shrink film is fed around the product

The film inverter creates an opening in the center-folded film, and the product is fed in the middle.

3. The L-bar comes down to seal the film

Two heated sealing bars form an L shape, cutting and sealing the film simultaneously.

4. The sealed package exits the sealer

After sealing, the product exits the L-bar sealer on a conveyor and moves to a shrink tunnel.

5. The package enters a shrink tunnel

The shrink tunnel, separate from an L-bar sealer, creates controlled heat to shrink film around the product.

What Is an L-Bar Sealer?

An L-bar sealer is a packaging machine that uses an L-shaped heated sealing bar to cut and seal shrink film around a product. L-bar sealers are commonly used with shrink tunnels to create a tight, professional package for products of various sizes and shapes.

The L-bar sealer utilizes:

  • An L-shaped sealing mechanism – The vertical cutting motion of the PTFE hot knife delivers a consistent seal every time.
  • Shrink film โ€“ L-bar sealers are engineered to run a wide range of polyolefin shrink films.
  • Manual vs. automatic operation – L-sealer machines are available in manual, pneumatic, and fully automatic models to meet a range of production needs.
  • Relationship to shrink tunnels โ€“ L-bar sealers are generally sold with a heat-shrink tunnel to finish the packaging process.

What Is an L-Bar Sealer Used For?

L-bar sealers are used for a variety of products and industries.

Most products consist of:

  • Retail products
  • Boxes and cartons
  • Food and consumer products
  • Printed materials
  • Multi-packs
  • Industrial products
  • Products requiring protective or tamper-evident packaging

What Are the Main Components of an L-Bar Sealer?

L-bar sealers generally contain the following features:

  • L-shaped sealing bar
  • Film carriage/film roll
  • Pin Perforator
  • Product conveyor
  • Sealing mechanism
  • Film handling system
  • Safety features
  • Controls

  • What are the product dimensions?
  • How many products need to be packaged per minute?
  • What type of film will be used?
  • Is the operation manual or automated?
  • What sealing-bar size is required?
  • Is a shrink tunnel needed?
  • What space is available on the production floor?
