Package Security and Strength – Strapper

Now more than ever, package strength and security are important to customers. When a package arrives, the customer wants the peace of mind that their package has arrived without tampering. Case tapers that apply tamper-evident tape are great for ensuring peace of mind, but what if there was another level of security that could be added? This blog will explore package security and how a strapper can be a great addition to your packaging line.

What is a Strapper?

Strappers are used in several industries for a variety of applications. A strapper is designed to apply a plastic strap around your packages, preventing them from opening during handling and transit. Once the nylon strap is placed around the package, it is held, tightened, and bound where the two ends meet. Various methods are used for binding including heat, friction, or ultrasonic welds.

Types of Strappers

There are three common types of strappers – automatic, semi-automatic, and manual. A manual strapper is great for its versatility and the ability to be mobile. Manual strappers are typically smaller in size, either equipped with casters or handheld. They are great for strapping pallets at a lower rate.

Semi-automatic strappers require an operator to place the product on the machine table. Once the product is in place, the operator takes the strap, wraps it around the package, and inserts it into a slot on the opposite side. This will then trigger the strap to tighten around the product and bind the strap.

Fully automatic strappers detect the package as it moves down the conveyor. Once the package triggers the strapper, the machine will automatically apply the straps around the package. Automatic strappers are ideal for high-volume packaging lines, typically strapping about 60 containers per minute, and are ideal because they do not require an operator.

Eastey’s EXS-100 is an example of a semi-automatic strapper. The EXS-100 comes with a bottom seal design that is ideal for low to medium volume users who need additional security beyond case taping. In addition, the EXS-100 features electronic tension control, allowing the user to adjust the proper tension for a wide variety of packages, and the heated strap-weld sealing system ensures a secure strap.

Which strapper is the right choice?

When purchasing new equipment, it is always important to research and decide which option would be the right addition to your packaging line. If your production line is low in volume, perhaps a manual or semi-automatic strapper will fit your needs. A higher volume production line may need an automatic strapping machine to meet your demands. It is also key to look at the difference in machines. Ensuring you have the right amount of space in your facility is important. Will you want the strapper to be mobile or completely stationary? Many of these questions can be answered when consulting with a sales representative.

Overall, a strapper is a great way to add security and prevent packages from opening during handling and transit.
